Stay on top of safety
when removing snow from roofs
On
February 1, a worker in the Minto area fractured his leg when
he fell through a skylight while clearing snow from a
warehouse roof. With the tremendous amount of snow that’s
fallen recently, we thought we’d remind you how to safely
remove it from rooftops.
“Removing snow from a roof
can pose a number of hazards,” said Roland Roy, an engineer
with WorkSafeNB. “And although it can be dangerous, it’s
something that must be done since not removing it can be even
more dangerous,” he said. “Snow loads can cause roof collapse
and, if the roof is sloped, can fall onto pedestrians and
vehicles below.” Ensuring loads don’t
accumulate on roofs is also a requirement by law. Regulation
91-191, Section 101(1) of the OHS Act states:

The
draft CSA Z1002 Standard, Occupational Health and Safety -
Hazard Identification and Elimination and Risk Assessment and
Control is now available on the Canadian Standards Association
website for public review.
This is the first edition
of CSA Z1002, and is part of the CSA Z1000 suite of

The Canadian Society for Safety
Engineering encourages students aged 5-18 to think about
workplace health and safety through its “Safety on the
Job” poster contest. This year marks the 9th year the
CSSE has promoted the contest, which features two
categories: free-hand drawings or computer generated.
The contest is open to children, grandchildren, nieces,
or nephews of any CSSE member, NAOSH Week Regional
Committee members, their colleagues, fellow employees,
neighbours or friends. Deadline for submissions
is March 25, 2011. For contest rules and entry
