Informed Workers are
Safe Workers
That’s the message WorkSafeNB will
promote when it launches its Orientation Guide for
Employers publication at the 31st Annual
Health and Safety Conference.
Research conducted by
Bristol Omnifacts for WorkSafeNB indicated that only 43% of
new and young workers in the province received an orientation
when they started a new job. Click here to read

In
the Courts
Alfred Chapman, a
supervisor, pleaded guilty August 24 to an offence under
General Regulation 91-191 subsection 239(2) of
the OHS Act for failing to provide a safety lock and
key to an employee who may have to lock out a machine. An
employee supervised by Chapman was seriously injured when he
failed to lock out a machine he was cleaning. Chapman was
fined $2,000.
Ask
Us
Q:
I work in the fishing industry
as a maintenance worker. I was instructed to clean up a pile
of rotting fish bait on a dockside that was so foul, my
co-workers and I were physically sick to our stomachs. Is
there a level of scent concentration for which a worker can
request a mask, respirator, or refuse the job?

DID YOU KNOW
?
More than half of workplace
accidents involving young and new workers occur during
their first six months on the job. The injury rate for
young workers, especially young male workers, is much
higher than that of the overall
population.
