WorkSafeNB newsletter
readership survey
WorkSafeNB
publishes two newsletters — CONTACT, our bi-annual print
newsletter, and E-News, a monthly electronic newsletter.
Because our aim is to provide the most efficient and effective
service possible to our stakeholders, we are conducting a
short survey to gauge your reading habits, in the hopes that
your feedback will help us improve on our
newsletters.
The names of all those who respond will be
put into a draw for a WorkSafeNB rolling duffel bag. Click
here to
respond to the survey (for electronic copy).
2013 average
assessment rates announced
WorkSafeNB
recently announced a 15% decrease in the average assessment
rate. A strong funded position and decreasing claims costs
warranted an average rate reduction of $0.26, from $1.70 per
$100 of payroll in 2012, to $1.44. The minimum assessment rate
remains at $0.28 per $100 of payroll. The rates, effective
January 1, 2013, continue to be the lowest in Atlantic
Canada.
The rate reduction will see assessed premiums
for approximately 13,500 employer operations either drop or
remain stable in 2013. More.
Work, stress, and
today's student
A
new study published by the Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé
en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST) found that students
who held a job or jobs during their studies faced a range of
health risks and that job characteristics, working hours and
career paths had an impact on various health indicators.
In particular, researchers found that two out of five
women and nearly one in five men reported an overall level of
fatigue deemed to require medical attention. More.
Scholarship
opportunity for students studying OHS
The
Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS)

enrolled, either full-time or part-time, in an occupational
health and safety related course or program leading to an
occupational health and safety certificate, diploma or degree
at an accredited Canadian college or university. CCOHS is now
accepting entries for the 2012-13 Dick Martin Scholarship
Award. Deadline for entries is January 31, 2013. Click here for

Working smart, from
the start
If
you noticed scores of young, unfamiliar faces around the water
cooler earlier this month, don't be alarmed – they weren't
there to replace you.
On November 7, close to
9,000 Grade 9 students joined their parents in
hundreds of workplaces across New Brunswick for Take
Our Kids to Work™. This national program from The Learning
Partnership is held the first Wednesday of every November and
gives young people a chance to shadow their parent or another
adult at work for a day, to get an up close glimpse
of work life. More

Ask
Us
Q:
I
am a contractor who is required to frequently perform
trenching work where there is a risk of contact with utility
lines or piping. According to the owners, it is not always
possible to de-energize utility lines or piping. Are there
circumstances where work can be carried out within 600 mm (two
feet) of the utility lines or piping without de-energizing
them?
